Setting up a Credit Card Merchant Account
By: Jeff D McQueen

Are you one of those persons who has just started an online store and looking into an option of accepting online payments through credit cards by your customers? If the answer is yes, then you need to find yourself a credit card merchant account.

If you are familiar in browsing through the internet, just pull up your favorite search engine and type credit card merchant and you will see numerous websites offering the service. Since you have just started your online store you should set it up in a way that the main mode of payment is through credit cards. This is where merchant account steps in; they will be the ones to make sure that your website will be able to accept credit card payments. This way, customers see your site as a legitimate online store.

The next step you need to take is to get a merchant account. First, you need to go to your bank and inquire how to set up a merchant account and explain to them why you are getting one. If they do not have this type of service they may refer you to an ISO otherwise known as an Independent Selling Organization. This company is an outside company from your bank which markets merchant accounts in behalf of another bank that accepts credit card transactions online. These ISOs may charge a small amount of application fee or small percentage of your transactions when you start making money online.

If you have decided not to go through with the ISO recommended by your bank, then look for other ISOs in the internet and compare their set up and transaction fees by putting all the necessary information into a spreadsheet. Try to look for feedbacks regarding the ISOs that you have shortlisted in your spreadsheet, to ensure that you won't be getting a company who received a lot of complaints from its customers. Once you decided which ISO you want, then your online payment system setup would be completed.

To give you more confidence in getting a merchant account, let's discuss some of its advantages. With the order system found on your own website, you will have flexibility in controlling the ordering process. Unlike alternate payment methods where the customer will be taken to another website to make the payment which creates confusion, with merchant account, payment will be made on your own website which will build customer confidence. Lastly, with managing payment transactions through a

credit card merchant account, you will have more control in terms of you fulfillment and shipping system. Through this, you will be assured that all your transactions online will run smoothly which will be appreciated by your customers, which in turn will result to more purchases and revenues.
