Pet Portraits a Challenge for Photographers
By: Larry Neal

It's not unusual to see a dog behave like a human, usually during inconvenient times. Dog owners think pets are so close to being actual humans since they are emotional creatures too and deserve to be loved. Because of their recognition and study of what dogs like and dislike, animal portraits can be done successfully.

When a dog does not want to have his picture taken, he barks, wags a friendly tail, or refuses to prick up his ears. He would choose to be stubborn and distracting. Appealing to the dog's sense of hearing rather than its sense of smell is an effective way to startle your dog into doing an interesting pose. When a dog tries to smell around, he ruins the gracefulness of the lines and contours, unlike a dog who just stands up and pricks his ears when slightly startled.

A dog's photograph is best shot in the early morning since this is when he is bright and alert. A dog is more capable of doing the desired pose if he is hungry and alert. Also, he does not feel so hot at this time, and his mouth will not hang open as much. A fatigued dog makes a poor subject, and a dog with his mouth open is not looked upon with favor, with the exception of two breeds, the German Shepherd and the Saint Bernard.

The studios of dog photographers resemble in one respect the studios of radio broadcasting stations. There is a wide variety of sound effects on hand for them to use. There are dozens of sounds available, such as mouse squeaks and bird calls.

A breeder wants to see perfection shown in his dog's portrait as he inspects the proofs. Dog photographers recognize a distinction between the work of an artist in sketching and the camera portraits of caninea. In drawing, an artist does not try to capture what she knows is there but what is visible to him. For dog photographers, capturing what is not easily seen is what they must do.

Emphasize the length of a daschund's body when taking its picture. Dogs' bodies should be slightly tilted at an angle and their feet should be placed firmly on the ground for the shot. Of all the breeds, it is the German shepherd that is most sophisticated. He is often friendly with humans but is liable to be antagonistic where other dogs are around.

There are cases in which amateur photographers forget that taking pictures of dogs is easiest when the dogs are hungry. They proceed to stuff their dogs before or during the process of photographing them and naturally enough have lazy, disinterested subjects. A dog's alertness would make him do the pose without difficulty.

When photographers pose the dog, most of the time they request for the absence of the breeder. The reason why photographers do this is because pet owners can make a fuss about their dogs in the same manner as a concerned mother. The dog is already aware of the tricks his owner employs to get his attention, and this would not at all help. This would be a different matter if various sound effects were used since this would bring out the desired reaction from the animal.
